UAE Residents Smoke Less and Get More Active

A new National Health and Nutrition Survey 2024–2025 by the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) shows encouraging shifts in the health habits of people across the UAE. The study, which covered 20,000 households including citizens, residents, and workers, revealed that smoking rates have declined, while physical activity levels have risen significantly over recent years. Officials highlighted a 2.4 per cent drop in smoking prevalence and an 11.7 per cent increase in exercise levels over the past seven years, alongside a notable 14.8 per cent decrease in obesity rates over the last 15 years, reflecting growing awareness around healthier lifestyles and preventive care.

Despite these improvements, the survey also identified persistent health challenges that remain a priority for authorities. More than half of adults still don’t meet recommended activity levels, and a substantial proportion continue to struggle with risk factors such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and poor dietary habits, including widespread excess sodium intake and nutrient deficiencies among both adults and children. MoHAP officials said the data will guide future health strategy, focusing on prevention, early intervention, and targeted public health initiatives to further improve wellbeing across the country.
