The long-awaited Gulf Railway project connecting six GCC Emirates is now more than 50 per cent complete, according to officials overseeing the regional transport network. The 1,700-kilometre railway system is expected to become fully operational by December 2030.
The ambitious project is designed to improve transport, trade and tourism across the Gulf region, while also reducing travel times between major cities and ports. According to approved studies, passenger numbers are expected to rise from around six million in 2030 to more than eight million by 2045 as rail infrastructure across the GCC continues to expand.
Several major rail developments are already progressing across the region, including the UAE-Oman Hafeet Rail project and a planned high-speed rail link between Riyadh and Doha. The wider GCC railway vision aims to create a fully connected transport network that will support economic growth, freight movement and easier cross-border travel throughout the Gulf.
