New federal traffic regulations will limit motorists in the UAE to a maximum of nine hours of driving within any 24-hour period, starting January 1, 2027. The new rule applies to all drivers, not just professional motorists, truck drivers or delivery personnel. It is part of a wider overhaul of UAE road safety regulations designed to reduce accidents and improve driving standards.

The regulations also make it illegal to drive while fatigued or exhausted to the point where it affects your ability to drive safely, regardless of how long you’ve been behind the wheel. Other requirements include mandatory seat belts for all passengers, including those in the back, restrictions on mobile phone use while driving and ensuring vehicles are roadworthy before setting off. Speed limits on internal residential roads will also be capped at 40km/h.
Further changes cover pedestrian safety, overtaking, reversing and the use of motorways. Cyclists will be required to wear helmets and ride in single file, while professional and delivery drivers will face additional requirements, including valid permits and approved equipment. The new regulations form part of a broader effort to improve road safety across the UAE.
