Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 39, bringing an emotional end to his Argentina career. In a heartfelt message to fans, Messi said the decision was painful but that he understood it was time to step away. He leaves the national team as Argentina’s all-time leading scorer with 125 goals.
However, the retirement does not mean Messi is retiring from football altogether. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner remains an Inter Miami player and is expected to continue his club career. In fact, his retirement announcement came just hours after an outstanding performance for Miami, where he scored four goals and provided an assist in a 7-1 victory over Montreal.
Messi joined Inter Miami in 2023 after leaving Paris Saint-Germain and helped the club win the MLS Cup in 2025. With international football now behind him, he can focus entirely on his club career, and potentially continue his pursuit of 1,000 professional goals. He currently needs 73 more goals to reach that milestone.
