Johnny Depp has hinted that he could return as Captain Jack Sparrow in a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film, but he has one condition: he wants to give the hugely successful franchise the ending he believes it deserves. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight while promoting his new film Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, Depp said he would only want to be involved if the next instalment could send the series off on a better note.

The actor also spoke about his close relationship with producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who has worked on all five previous Pirates films. Depp said he would happily work with Bruckheimer again, explaining that he trusts him and that they share a deep friendship. Bruckheimer has previously expressed his desire to bring Depp back, saying the decision would ultimately depend on whether he liked the script.

A sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film is currently in development, although Disney has yet to confirm a cast or release date. Screenwriter Jeff Nathanson, who worked on the previous instalment, Dead Men Tell No Tales, is developing the script. Bruckheimer has described the project as a reboot but has repeatedly made clear that he would like Depp to be involved. The actor’s future with the franchise became uncertain following his highly publicized legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard in 2022.
