The Weeknd Debuts Anime-Inspired New Song ‘Tokyo’ in Japan

The Weeknd has debuted an unreleased song called “Tokyo” during the opening shows of the Asian leg of his After Hours Til Dawn tour. The track was performed at Belluna Dome in Saitama, near Tokyo, where he was joined on stage by Japanese singer Yoko Takahashi.

The song incorporates elements of “A Cruel Angel’s Thesis”, the iconic opening theme from the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, which Takahashi originally performed. The performance also featured visuals inspired by Neon Genesis Evangelion and the video game NieR:Automata, with NieR creative director Yoko Taro responsible for the visual presentation.

“Tokyo” has now been performed at both of The Weeknd’s shows at the venue, although there is no confirmed release date for the track. It is the second unreleased song he has debuted live this year, following “Rio”, his collaboration with Anitta. The new material also comes after The Weeknd recently confirmed that he has no plans to retire the stage name, despite previously suggesting he might move on from the character.
