Dubai residents can now ride in autonomous taxis for free as part of a new public trial launched by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). The driverless vehicles are operating in Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah, with passengers able to book complimentary journeys through the Apollo Go app. The initiative is part of Dubai's wider ambition to make 25% of all journeys autonomous by 2030 and follows extensive testing of the vehicles on the emirate's roads.
The service is being operated in partnership with autonomous driving companies Apollo Go and WeRide, with 100 self-driving taxis deployed in the first phase. While rides booked through the Apollo Go app are currently free, the vehicles are also available through Uber. The trial is expected to help refine the technology before a wider rollout across Dubai, supporting the city's vision of safer, smarter and more sustainable transport.
