Brazilian superstar Neymar has announced his retirement from international football following Brazil’s shock 2-1 defeat to Norway in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16. The 34-year-old, who came off the bench to score a late penalty in what proved to be his final appearance for the Seleção, was left in tears after the final whistle before confirming his 16-year international career had come to an end.
Neymar finishes as Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer, ending an iconic international career that saw him represent his country at four World Cups and become one of the nation’s greatest-ever players. In an emotional farewell, he reflected on the fact that his Brazil journey began and ended at the same stadium in New Jersey, saying simply: “I tried. Now it’s over.”
Elsewhere England became the first team to defeat Mexico at Estadio Azteca in a thrilling 3-2 victory. England will face Norway in the Quarter Final on Sunday morning at 1am.
