Stephen Colbert is set to co-write a new Lord of the Rings film alongside his son, screenwriter Peter McGee, marking a major career shift for the late-night host. A lifelong fan of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work, Colbert will collaborate with original trilogy writer Philippa Boyens on the project, which is being developed by Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema. The film, currently titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, was announced with the involvement of director Peter Jackson, who helmed the original blockbuster trilogy.

The story is expected to explore previously unadapted parts of Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring, expanding the Middle-earth universe while staying true to both the books and the films. It will be one of several new projects in development, following another upcoming film focused on Gollum. The move comes as Colbert prepares to step away from The Late Show in 2026, opening the door for a new creative chapter in Hollywood.
