Microsoft is taking another step toward smarter hybrid work. By December 2025, Microsoft Teams will automatically update an employee’s work location when their device connects to a corporate Wi-Fi network. This new feature, listed on the Microsoft 365 Roadmap—aims to eliminate manual status changes and reduce confusion about who’s actually working onsite.

When a user connects to their organisation’s Wi-Fi, Teams will instantly set their location to the correct building. The update will roll out globally for both Windows and Mac, using Wi-Fi SSID recognition to power the detection.
The feature fits into Microsoft’s broader strategy to make Teams more intelligent and context-driven. It builds on AI tools like Channel Agent and Project Manager Agent, which already help automate project updates and summarise conversations. Now, that intelligence extends into the physical workspace.
